What Is Trail Running?

Trail running is a sport practiced on natural paths, mountains, forests, and off-road terrain. Unlike road running, trail running involves irregular terrain, significant elevation gain and loss, and direct contact with nature. Distances range from 10 km in more accessible races to 100 miles and beyond in ultra trail events.

Trail running races vary widely: from high-altitude skyraces to forest trails on flat terrain, to ultra distances that require days of continuous running. Each race is a unique experience shaped by the landscape it traverses.

How to Use the Race Calendar

Running Around provides a comprehensive tool for finding trail running races worldwide. You can filter races by name, country, region, date, minimum distance (km), and minimum positive elevation gain (D+). The UTMB® Index and ITRA filters let you quickly find races that award points for international qualifications.

The interactive map displays all filtered races with their geographic locations — click a marker to see the race name and access the detail page. Clusters expand as you zoom in, allowing you to explore by geographic area.

UTMB® Index and UTMB Stones

The UTMB® Index is the official qualification system for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc and events in the UTMB World Series circuit. Qualifying races award Running Stones, which accumulate to earn the right to participate in the most sought-after races in the circuit, including the legendary UTMB® in Chamonix. On Running Around you can filter all races that award UTMB Stones or contribute to the UTMB® Index.

Running Stones range from 1 to 3 per race based on course difficulty and length. The UTMB® Index also accounts for performance relative to the field, rewarding results in terms of ranking and finish time.

ITRA Points and Performance Index

The ITRA (International Trail Running Association) is the international organization that certifies trail running races worldwide. ITRA-certified races award points based on course difficulty (distance and elevation) and athlete performance. ITRA points are used as an admission criterion for numerous international races, including the CCC and TDS in the UTMB circuit.

The ITRA Performance Index is a personal index that measures an athlete's level in trail running, calculated based on results achieved in ITRA-certified races over the last three years. On Running Around you can find all races that award ITRA points, easily selectable through the dedicated filter.
